A failing fuel pump usually causes hard starting, hesitation under load, stalling, or low measured fuel pressure. Do not condemn it from a code alone: verify the fuse, relay, power and ground, then compare commanded and actual pressure. A quiet pump can be bad, but it can also be a good pump receiving no electricity.
The fuel pump moves fuel from the tank to the engine at the pressure and volume the injection system requires. Port-injected engines commonly use moderate pressure; gasoline direct-injection and diesel systems add a mechanically driven high-pressure pump after the in-tank supply pump.
Pump failures often appear first under load because demand is highest during acceleration, climbing, or towing. A worn pump may idle normally but lose pressure when flow demand rises. Electrical faults can look identical, which is why voltage and ground checks belong ahead of replacement.
Pressure that is too high is not automatically a strong pump. A restricted return, stuck regulator, incorrect sensor reading, or control fault can create P0088/P0090 symptoms. Measure first and buy second.

- Yes. Worn windings and brushes can open or slow as temperature rises, causing a repeatable hot stall followed by a restart after cooling. Confirm that pressure and electrical supply disappear during the failure.
- Does a quiet key-on prime prove the pump is bad?
- No. Silence also comes from a fuse, relay, wiring, ground, immobilizer or control-module problem. Test for power at the pump before buying one.
- Can I drive with low fuel pressure?
- Only far enough to reach a safe repair location if drivability is stable. A lean engine can hesitate or stall while merging and sustained lean operation can damage the catalytic converter.
