What it means
A diesel has no spark plugs: it ignites fuel with the heat of compression alone. When the engine is cold, the metal soaks up that heat, so every cylinder gets a glow plug: a small electric heating rod that pre-warms the chamber while you see “wait to start” on the dash, then keeps glowing for a minute or two after startup to smooth the idle and cut the white smoke. P0380 sets when the computer detects an electrical problem: an open, a short, or an implausible current draw, in the circuit that feeds those plugs.
Circuit “A” is the primary glow circuit, on many engines it feeds every plug; on engines that split the plugs into two groups, it feeds the first group. Because this is a whole-circuit code rather than a single-plug code (those are P0671 through P0676), the suspects are the parts the plugs share: the fuse, the relay or control module that switches their heavy current, the feed wiring and bus bar, and the grounds. One shorted plug dragging down the whole circuit is also possible, which is why the diagnosis below tests cheap and shared before individual and expensive.
The severity of this code is written by the thermometer. Above roughly 50 °F, a healthy diesel will usually start with weak or no glow assist, just with a longer crank and a puff of white smoke. Below freezing, a dead glow circuit can mean a no-start, period. 1 Check the fuse and relay first
Find the glow system fuse or fusible link in the underhood box (your owner’s manual maps it) and inspect it. Swap or test the relay if the system uses one. This is the free five-minute check that resolves a real share of glow-circuit codes: high-current circuits eat fuses and relays for a living.

2 Verify voltage reaches the plugs during the glow cycle
Cold engine, key on: during the wait-to-start period, a test light or multimeter on the glow plug feed (the bus bar or each plug terminal) should show close to battery voltage for several seconds. Voltage present means the supply side works and your problem is plugs or connections; no voltage sends you back to the relay, module, and wiring.

3 Resistance-test each glow plug
Disconnect the feed and measure each plug from its terminal to a clean engine ground. Healthy plugs read very low, typically under a couple of ohms (check your spec). An open plug is dead; a plug reading near zero may be shorted and dragging the circuit. Testing all of them tells you whether this is a one-plug story or a circuit story.

4 Inspect the feed wiring, bus bar, and grounds
Follow the heavy feed from relay or module to the plugs: look for chafed insulation, green crusty terminals, a loose bus bar nut, and verify the engine grounds are clean and tight. High-amp circuits fail at their connections far more often than in mid-wire.

5 Condemn the module or relay only by elimination
If the plugs test good, the wiring is sound, and the feed still never goes live during the glow cycle, the controller has earned the blame. On module-equipped engines, a scan tool that shows glow system data or commands an output test makes this verdict cleaner.
