  2. 2 Do the cold-soak comparison

    After the car sits overnight, key on, engine off: ECT and intake air temperature (IAT) should be within about 5 °C (10 °F) of each other and near the outdoor temperature. A big gap with no block heater plugged in condemns the sensor.

  3. 3 Watch the warm-up curve

    Start it and watch ECT in live data: it should climb smoothly to about 85–105 °C (185–220 °F) within 10–15 minutes of mixed driving and then hold. A plateau around 60–75 °C is a stuck-open thermostat; jumps and dropouts are wiring; a reading that never leaves cold is the sensor.

  4. 4 Verify with an infrared thermometer

    Point an IR thermometer at the thermostat housing next to the sensor and compare with the scanner. Several degrees of steady disagreement condemns the sensor; agreement points at wiring or the thermostat.

  5. 5 Check coolant level and bleed the system

    Low coolant or an air pocket at the sensor produces exactly this code. Top up and bleed properly, especially after any recent cooling-system work.
